What a kundalī tells you, and what it doesn’t

People come to a first reading with one of two worries. Some expect the chart to say their life is already decided. Others expect it to say nothing useful at all. Both expect the chart to speak on its own, and it doesn’t. A chart answers questions. Bring a clear one and it is surprisingly exact. Bring none and it is a page of symbols.

What the chart is

Your janma kundalī is the sky as it stood over the place you were born, at the minute you were born. That sky is divided into twelve houses, the bhāva, and each stands for one area of life: the body, wealth, siblings, home, children, illness and service, marriage, longevity, fortune, work, gains, and loss. The nine grahas fall somewhere in those houses. That is all a chart is: nine things in twelve rooms.

What makes it readable is weight. A graha in its own sign sits firmly. One in a sign it dislikes sits uneasily. Two grahas facing each other across the chart pull on the same thread. When we read for you, we are looking for where the weight sits: which parts of your life carry more than their share, and which are lighter than you assume.

What it tells you

Three things, reliably.

Where the pressure is. Most people who sit with us already know which part of their life is pressing on them. The chart names it and says why: which house is loaded, and which graha is loading it. Knowing the shape of a pressure changes how you carry it.

When. The dashā system, the sequence of periods each graha rules across a lifetime, is the part of Jyotish that surprised me most when I came to it from engineering. It gives you a calendar. Not “you will marry on the fourteenth”, but “this is a period in which marriage is a live question, and the next one is not”. Timing is what a chart does best.

What kind of effort works. The same goal, whether a business, a child or a house, can be reached by more than one route, and the chart is honest about which routes are blocked for you. That is not fate. It is the difference between pushing on the right door and the wrong one.

What it does not tell you

It does not tell you what to decide. I say this in every first sitting, because it is what people most want and what a chart cannot give. The kundalī shows the ground. The walking is yours.

It does not diagnose. A sixth house under strain says “look after the body in this period”. It does not say what is wrong with the body. That is a doctor’s work, and I will send you to one before I say anything more about the sixth house.

And it does not work by fear. If someone has told you that a graha in your chart is a curse which only a particular remedy can lift, you have been sold something. A difficult placement is a difficult placement, and we will say so. But in fifty years at this desk we have not read a chart that had no way through.

How to bring a good question

Bring the birth details exactly: the date, the time to the minute if you can find it, and the place. A birth time that is out by twenty minutes can move the lagna, the rising sign that anchors the whole chart, and I would rather correct it with you than read confidently from the wrong one. If the time is genuinely lost, say so. There are ways to work backward from the life you have already lived.

Then bring the question the way you would put it to a friend who happened to know the sky. “Is this the year to leave the job?” is a better question than “tell me about my career”. The chart answers the question it is asked.
