वास्तु the house
The mandala. The plan a house is measured against: nine by nine, eighty-one padas, with the directions on its four sides.
The directions have keepers. Kubera north, Īśāna north-east, Indra east, Agni south-east, Yama south, Nirṛti south-west, Varuṇa west, Vāyu north-west — and the elements keep their quarters.
The centre stays open. Brahmasthāna — where a house breathes. Where a house pushes against the people in it, we say so, and prefer remedies to demolition.
